SPORTS FIELD
In 2018 we fundraised and cooperated with Stichting Helpt Jongeren in order to build a sports field at Zerktouni College in Meknes, Morocco. The school has quite a large amount of space, however it is poorly maintained and under-utilised. We arranged for the installation of a multi-purpose sports field made of a concrete base, with a chain-link fence for security. The field has permanent basketball backboards, with removable football goals and volleyball posts.
The students at the school have since been able to experience their sports lessons on the field, which enriches their curriculum, and encourages activity and movement.
Sanitation Block Renovation
In 2019, in cooperation with Stichting Wilde Ganzen, we fundraised for the renovation of the sanitation block at Zerktouni College in Meknes, Morocco. Prior to this, the sanitation block was in poor condition, with no real access to running water, broken sinks and non-existent taps, and a general state of disrepair and poor hygiene. We replaced all the toilets, with a mix of both squat and sitting toilets, completely redid the plumbing, installed new sinks and mirrors, and retiled the entire block, with priority given to fittings that require minimal maintenance. Students of the school are now able to use a hygienic facility during their school time, they have more privacy, and are no longer reluctant to use their bathroom facilities. The outside of the sanitation block was also renovated with fresh paint and rendering.
CLASSROOM Renovation
In the years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2023 we have worked on renovating all the classrooms in Zerktouni College, Meknes. Our students from Rotterdam do this themselves, by first fundraising the money for the supplies needed, and then completing the physical work themselves as a team. Our students have renovated the Art, Music, Science, and library rooms, as well as four general-purpose classrooms. This has involved repainting all walls and doors, doing a general clean, and adding decorative murals. Any specialised labour such as electrical or plumbing work was completed by local tradesmen hired for this purpose.
Each year of the project, we have replaced the external windows and window frames of classrooms and rooms in the school, removing the weather-damaged wooden frames that previously existed and replacing them with aluminium framed windows with a sliding mechanism for ventilation. The replacement of windows in the school is now complete.
In the science and art rooms, we resurfaced all the work-benches. These were previously constructed of concrete, and were a rough surface on which the students worked. All science and art rooms now have smooth tiled benches, as well as the science preparation room which we renovated at the same time.
student sponsorship
In Morocco, many children come from families who can’t afford to give their sons and daughters items that we take for granted. In 2020 we sponsored 20 underprivileged students at Zerktouni College in Meknes with gifts of school supplies to make their school experience better – this included stationary, backpacks, books, and for each child a personal item such as a football.
In 2023 we expanded our sponsorship program and supplied 83 students at Ouljat Soultan main campus with school supplies. Each student received a backpack full of stationary and books, and a small gift. We also travelled to a very poorly maintained second location of this school and provided each of the 12 students there with a sponsor package.
