Zerktouni College
Zerktouni College is a middle-school in Meknes, Morocco, catering to approximately 300 students from around 11 to 15 years of age. It is positioned in an average neighbourhood in the south of Meknes, and has a teaching staff of 12. We have been partnering with Zerktouni since our first organisation visit in 2017, followed by the first Community Service visit in 2018. In 2023 we returned to Zerktouni for the first time since the Covid pandemic.
Our work at Zerktouni has included the renovation of classrooms, replacement of all windows, installation of a sports field, renovation of the sanitation block, and sponsorship of students from a low-socioeconomic background.
We can see at this stage that Zerktouni College has benefited greatly from our assistance over the past five years. Whilst investment in the maintenance of the school from outside doesn’t appear to have changed, the staff have made extra efforts in applying for grants, and more projects are occurring of their own initiative. This includes a cooperation between the school and the local community to create an additional sports field, and the recent installation of some computers.
Ouljat Soultan
Ouljat Soultan is a primary school located in the hills about 100km from Meknes. The school building was completed in 2018, and caters for 85 students from the ages of four until about 16. It is in a very sparsely populated area of Morocco, surrounded by fields, and many of the students travel to school by donkey. Our first visit to Ouljat Soultan was in February 2023 for an orientation visit, and to gain more information about the school and its annexes for the initiation of future projects.
Many of the students from this school come from quite low-socioeconomic backgrounds, and will benefit from our support via school supplies and other potential resources in the future. A large portion of the population travel to school by donkey, or by foot, and there is perhaps room for us to look into transportation options for the future.
